This may sound petty, but it's something that really bugs me and I'd like to know if I'm the only one who feels this way.
I will say nice hand to someone when they have played a hand very well, maybe diguising their hand well or milking every penny possible from a flush. But when I see people saying NH to someone who went all-in pre-flop with AA beat KQ, it drives me mad! They might aswell just say "Nice cards", as the player with AA has done nothing but put all his chips in the middle and then let the cards fall. Even worse is when they make a full house on the flop (after going all-in), people will say "vnh". Are you just congratulating the cards?!
Anyone else find this annoying or am I just a freak?

When someone sucks out on me I will say nice hand or nice catch. They are probably too stupid to realize I actually mean it as an insult, and they usually say thank you.

It normally doesn't bug me. And neither does "How are you?" when I fully realize the person asking me doesn't give a hoot
I freely give and receive "nh" as to me it doesn't mean anything; simply a courtesy almost. However, I will say "well played" if I thought the person actually did something that deserved recognition and not just pushed all his chips in the middle with AA

Small point but if the cards are good it's "nh", nice hand, if they played the hand well it's "wp", well played.
I will say nh to someone who flops a full house because, simply put, it is a nice hand. Doesn't mean he played it well.
Edit: PS Didn't mean to almost duplicate royal's reply!

I never say "well-played" to an opponent who beats me--I say it to a third person who makes a nice play on someone else. I want that person to understand I know enough to see he made a good play, so he will be careful of me. Also, I want him to have warm, fuzzy feelings about me, as his nice play probably gave him more chips than me.
It's ea
sier to just say NH to someone who beat you, whether they outdrew you, dominated you or outplayed you...then they never know if you really mean it or are expressing CTBob-like sarcasm.

I prefer saying "nice play" when someone plays it well and "nice catch" for someone who caught a miracle and caused someone else to suffer a bad beat. I reserve "nice hand" for quads and above because they truly are nice hands. If someone makes a hand on the flop I'll usually say something specific like "nice flop." It just makes more sense.

That was a pot when being on SB I called a raise from UTG with KdQd. Flop was Jd9c2c. I check and he bets. I almost never play check/call but this was an exception. I call and turn gave Jd9c2c[3d].
Check-bet-call again. River gave me the nuts
Jd9c2c[3d][Ts]. Check - bet - raise - call.
After that the following dialog took place:
He: How you could stay with no pair ?
Me: I got gotshot on a flop + 4 of a flush on turn.
He: So what ?
Me: So nothing - just responded your question.
He: But you had no pair.
Me: If K or Q hit was not it enough to beat you?
He: I got 3 jacks you moron.
Me: Moron is you. If I knew you got a set I would fold.
He: Nice catch, moron.
Me: Ty for your money.
I actually posted it because of the last sentence.
When I see "nice catch" I always reply "ty for your money". I believe these two idioms are totally fit each other.

I never say, "nice hand," or anything of the sort. I'm not there to be buddy-buddy with anybody. I'm there to take their money, plain and simple. The only comments you'll get out of me are usually the following:
"fuk me!"
"you gotta be friggin' kiddin' me!"
"nice play dumb asss"
These comments usually follow a BS hand that I should have won. I don't have any problems criticizing people. Sometimes I'll rant on a little more, but those are my top 3 favorite things to say after taking bad beat.

I tell them nice hand when they catch that river card that busts me. I want them to think they are great poker players and should always fish to the river. I want to build their confidence, so they will continue to play that way.
Then when i get a hand and flop the nuts, im gonna take all my money back and all of his when he doesnt catch his card on the river. I call it an investment strategy.

Interesting topic, reminds of a game I just played in a few nights ago with some kids I went to high school with, they're a year younger than me. Anyway, twice I had aces, and I was able to bust someone and double my money the other time. Both times these guys were like, "Wow, nice hand!" I just laughed and said thanks. Easiest money I ever made...

I play a lot of poker on party poker and naturally have gotten used to the bad beats you take on hands when you have totally outplayed a terrible player. But I have found that I get less angry if after taking the bad beat I type in "nh". Even though it wasn't a nice hand my kindness some how makes me feel better

I type NH to anyone who beats me in the pot regardless of whether they have been extremely lucky or have just out-played me. I hate when people say "nice catch", you might as well type "you lucky ****" in my eyes. I just prefer to have a good atmosphere at a table, whether live or online.

No offence, but in my experience, people who take losses like this are not good poker players because: a) they cant control their emotions and are therefore prone to tilt b) they dont understand poker - you want bad players/people playing badly at your table, why would you want them to leave or play better? sure they will outdraw you on a few occasions, but a good player will win big in the long run.

if you say nh to any1 u are a complete tool.
"nh" sounds really gay and shows ur a weak player
"u fucking river rat"
"merry christmas fag"
that is what u say to the fish to keep ur dignity.
saying "nice hand" to some1 IMO is a loss of pride as you are conceding that they are better than you might as well just suck their damn cock no room for politeness in poker

No actually saying nh shows that you keep a proffessional and can keep your cool. I respect people who can take a bad beat without acting like a two year old.

When someone starts talking trash to some fishy player who just caught lucky, then I'm quick to defend the fish. I want to keep the fishy player happily there at my table plus the player who got beat will usually get more ticked when I stick up for the winner. I win both ways, the fish keeps dumping his chips and the bad beat guy steams off more chips. Capitalism at its best!
Anyone who gets mad and talks smack to people who outdraw them need to step back and realize that you just make the overall situation much worse by trashtalking other players.
As for the topic, I'll talk with people sometimes but usually I don't say anything at the tables. Sometimes I joke and BS with people, but I'm generally an anti-social person and only there to win money. I've rarely said "nh" to anyone if it was not sincere.

I used to get mad when another player not in even in the hand would say "nh" or "nice hand" when my opponent made a miracle catch or makes a bad play against the odds. Now I realize they are either as stupid as the fish, congratulating the fish so he continues to play poorly, or is trying to put me on tilt. I now will occasionally use this technique against a sound player. I will congratulate his opponent that makes a poor play and still wins if I know it will piss off the good player and put him on tilt. I started doing this when I realized how much it would upset me when other players congratulate a fish that would make a poor play against me and win.
Seems online "nh" has become so common that is best to ignore the comment period. Most of the time it seems like a suck up to be nice term by a fish player that uses it just because a player won the hand. It doesn't matter how the hand was played they say "nice hand" no matter the situation. They do it so everyone will like them I suppose.
At a live game you don't hear the comment very often. If someone did make the "nice hand" every hand live probably someone would say "enough of that crap already, if you say 'nice hand' one more time I'm going to slap you silly you polite suck up!"

I have to agree with Frenchy here, most bad players say NH and most of the regulars(winning/break even players) I play with at 3/6 and 5/10 don't say a word, ever. So you can distinguish who's just there for fun.
This thread is sort of bothersome though as most people are just there to gamble and not make money and this is just them saying something which if you take some time to figure it out, you can start a conversation(thus in turn keeping this bad player at your table) seeing that somebody is looking at the chat box and using a keyboard, something a lot of poker players don't.
Also my motto to the frustrated frequent losers of my limits after a suck out on them. "Not everybody is here to make money" and it's true. They see that 64o that got that inside straight on the river and say "I wish that was my hand".
Remember the #1 poker rule KEEP THE BAD PLAYERS AT YOUR TABLE!!! So stick up for them next time somebody bitches at them.

I say "nh" every time there is a good play on me, and every time there is a suck out. Good players take it as a compliment as they will not be sucking out and in a way identify me as a good player as well (for identifying a good play). Bad players will probably not be aware that I didn't "mean it" and they will happilly keep calling down with horrible odds.
I also hate people who say "nice catch" as they intimidate and teach the inferior players but on the other hand they make it clear that they are not good players (can't control emotions, but more importantly do not understand many of the games' nuances).
Laslty, addressing some of the first posts, an all-in pre-flop with AA can be a very good play if you think your opponets will call with certain regularity. Why let them catch for cheap if they're going to call for all their chips anyway?

Thanks, Jeanie, for bringing up that point. The vast majority of players, IMO, are just there to have fun. It sucks to lose, but if it really pisses you off and if you can't control your temper, then you should probably think about why you play. There's not a player in the world who hasn't suffered a bad beat and most, if not all good players have outdrawn an opponent before as well. We've all been on both sides of the coin and will be again in the near future. Bad beats happen in poker, it's just part of the game. I like to talk to the other players at the table, even though I'm a winning player - but I think Jeanie's point is well-taken that most winning players keep their mouths shut and just play.

Usually I'll type nh because I'm too lazy to type anything else. matter of fact this is making me tired....
I'm in a micro NL game at Royal Vegas poker with my free $10...I just sat down and have $5. I get AQs in EP and limp in...one 2BB raise I call, 3 way flop--AQx rainbow....I bet $1.50 after it is checked all around, both call. Turn is a king, I check and this guy bets $1 and I call (should have raised?) and river is a King...I check, he bets $1 again, we all call and he shows K7o and takes it down.
I'm starting to believe that guy who said prima is rigged...

ok about 10 minutes after this, someone goes all-in with top pair, another calls with top 2 pair, and he calls with ace high, and catches 2 runners for three of a kind...
He is currently sitting at .05-.10 with 30 dollars...I'm gonna keep watching if I bust out...

Many things come to mind as I read this post:
A. AQ losing to K7 os is nothing, happens all the time.
B. You played the hand terrible from beginning to end.
(a)- limped with a strong hand
(b)- You checked called the turn, why? to make it cheap for him to draw?
C. I dont think you have enough gamesmanship to alledge that a poker site is corrupt.
Later- WASNTME

looks like the typical prima stuff. If you start to win a lot I would cash out most of it. Then you'll see what I mean. Very unrealistic site. I don't care how many times the people at the gaming club respond. By the way, what's up with fulltiltpoker. Their site is constantly down.

by the way. When I first started on 7 sultans I converted my free $10 into $300. THE MINUTE I cashed out...and I mean the minute....that's when those bad beats would occur hand after hand until I just gave up and tilted out. just ridiculous. How many times can you see a high pocket pair go all in AFTER the flop and lose to runner runner to THE ONLY OTHER GUY IN THE HAND.(last time I mention that)

I've played on prima on and off for over a year. Gaming Club. The interface is not much, but at the time (over a year ago), it had some of the best NL action on the net. I've never noticed so many Ace/rags take down Ace/K/Q/J. IN fact, I've never seen so many dominated hands win. Q/J loses to Q/5 at an alarming rate. Maybe these are just hands that have inplanted themselves into my memory, but the frequency is shocking. I play tournies every so often and the accout is up to about $600-$700 (from $100). Like I said, I play it very rarely. The tournies aren't bad, because the entrants are around 200 people and first will net you over $500. Just last week, in the $100,000 guaranteed, there were only 300 entrants. For $100, top prize was $27,000. It does have it's pro's. Of course, I lost a gigantic amount of my stack when A/5 hit their two pair on the river against my A/K. Eh.
